DATA COMMUNICATION 

• sending e-mail: we work together, communicate ideas and data
• remote logins: we can use computers remotely to run programs
• file transfers: we can move large quantities of data in a simple way

THE REAL WORLD-WIDE-WEB

The WWW is a part of internet, a collection of documents linked interactively into a network

• how does it work?
• where is all that information stored?

• no single computer is large enough!
• stored on all computers with web server software

• net browser (internet explorer, netscape) connects to remote computer using internet
• remote computer shows a list of available information, with hyperlinks
• clicking on hyperlink sends signal to remote computer to explore new page

• seamlessly navigate (surf) around the internet!
