Possible Funding Sources
- Federal Sources
- REU Supplements to Existing NSF Grants
REU Supplements may be requested for
ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component
of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative
agreements.
The deadline for REU Supplement requests varies with the research program. Contact the cognizant program officer
for the award or proposal that would be supplemented.
Undergraduate student participants in REU Supplements must be citizens
or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
The NSF is usually very receptive to
requests for REU supplements. The possibility of success if the request
is for supporting a named student with a project that
is already defined. A one- or two-page proposal decsribing the project
and giving some information about the student is usually sufficient.
- Supplements to DOE Grants
The Science Offices at the Department of Energy currently have no particular program that provides
support for undergraduates involved in research. However, this does not
mean that you cannot
approach your Program Manager at the DOE and enquire about this
possibility.

- The Florida State University Undergraduate
Research and Creative Activity Awards
These awards foster directed research and
creative opportunities for undergraduate students in all disciplines at
FSU. Selected applicants will receive a summer
stipend of $4000 to carry out their proposed research or creative
project for twelve weeks under the direction of a supervising
professor. Funds may be used for living
expenses, materials, and/or travel. All undergraduate students are
eligible to apply (with a supervising professor) provided that they are
enrolled at FSU at the time
of application, will have completed at least 12 credit hours at FSU
before initiating the research or creative activity and will return to
FSU as an undergraduate the
fall following the summer research or creative activity period.
Application Deadline is February 1, 2008,
and awards will be announced by March 14, 2008.
Selection criteria include the student's
academic record and achievement, initiative, expression of academic and
career interests, and the project's feasibility and
intellectual merit.
Recipients will be required to submit
progress reports during the summer and will be asked to present their
work at the Fall 2008 URCAA Symposium.
Applications and application materials are
available online at http://onf.fsu.edu.
For more information, contact
ONF at 644-7596. This website also provides hints on
strengthening your application.
- The Council on Research and Creativity Awards
The Council on Research and Creativity Awards (CRC) administers several grant programs to support the development of
research and creative endeavors by FSU faculty
members. These programs, made possible by FSU research-generated
funding, aka sponsored research and development (SRAD), have been
established to promote faculty
scholarship generally, but are also intended to assist and encourage
faculty members in seeking additional or continued funding for their
endeavors from external
sources.
These CRC grant funds can be used only to
support research and creative activity.
The CRC announces the availability
of awards for the two round program capped at $3,000 as a source of
modest funding for small grant activity for FSU
faculty. Examples of likely funding might be travel to a research or
performance site, preparation for research project or artistic
performances, to assist faculty with
small monetary support for the completion of a project, or other like
activity which department budgets are not equipped to handle.
The CRC will accept proposals from
full-time FSU faculty members, or others, listed as eligible to submit
proposals (see
http://www.research.fsu.edu/contractsgrants/documents/InvestigatorEligibility.pdf).
