Federal Research Opportunities
- Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program
The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an
opportunity for students to
participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during
the summer.
The goals of the NREIP are to encourage participating students to
pursue science and engineering
careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and
their participation in
research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology
efforts, which can lead to
employment within the DoN.
NREIP provides competitive research internships to approximately 230
college students (175
undergraduate students and 55 graduate students) each year.
Participating students typically
spend ten weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 12
DoN laboratories. To
participate, a student must be enrolled at an eligible
college/university (comprising
approximately 160 institutions; eligibility is determined by the Office
of Naval Research) and
have completed at least their sophomore year before beginning the
internship.
For undergraduate students the stipend is $5,500.00 and for graduate
students $6,500.00. More information is avaliable at
http://www.asee.org/nreip/index.cfm . Application deadline is January 14, 2008
- Research Experience for Undergraduates
Program
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
program supports active research participation
by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the
National Science
Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing
research programs or in
research projects designed especially for the purpose. These awards are
funded through the
National Science Foundation.
Award amounts vary by location. Students are granted stipends and, in
many cases, assistance
with housing and travel.
Undergraduate student participants at REU Sites must be citizens or
permanent residents of the
United States or its possessions.
Students must apply directly to REU
Sites, not to the NSF, and should consult the directory of active REU Sites on the Web
at
http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/reu_search.cfm.
The list of physics reu sites is available here, and materials research
sites are listed here.
Application deadlines vary with site.
- Science Undergraduate Laboratory
Internships
This program places students in paid internships in Science and
Engineering at any of several
Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the
program have decided on a career
in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience.
Students work with scientists
or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research
programs. The different
laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing
a Lab).
The summer programs at the various laboratories will run from late May
to mid-August, fall
programs run from August through December and spring programs from
January through May. The exact
start date will depend on the laboratory and will be given to
participants who have been accepted
at that specific laboratory. Students are required to participate for
the full term of the
program.
Every participant is required to:
- Complete the full ten or sixteen week
program
- Complete entrance and exit surveys on
the EDULINK web-site
- Behave in a responsible and
professional manner
- Submit a complete copy of a Research
Paper or Power Point presentation (depending on the
individual laboratory's policy)
- Submit an abstract of their research
in the required format
- Attend all scheduled events including
lectures, tours and group activities.
Participants should expect to spend more than 40 hours per week and
more than 8 hours per day in
activities and/or research related to their internships.
See
http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/scied/erulf/about.html for more
information. Labs will begin making internship selections on February 1, 2008.
-
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
(NIST)
Students and schools are invited to participate in the National
Institute of Standards and
Technology's Gaithersburg, MD Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
(SURF) program for
students majoring in science, mathematics and engineering. Note that
applications for
participation in the SURF program are only accepted from colleges or
universities, and not from
individual students. For more information, see
http://www.surf.nist.gov/welcome.htm. Deadline for application is
February 15, 2008.
- Internship
Opportunity for Students With
Disabilities Entry Point
This is a program of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offering Outstanding
Internship Opportunities
for Students with Disabilities in Science, Engineering, Mathematics,
Computer Science, and some
fields of Business. To meet the challenge of the competitive global
economy in the new
millennium, private industry and government research agencies must
expand the pool of technical
talent.
The ENTRYPOINT! program includes opportunities in private industry and
government agencies.
Students with disabilities can apply their skills in a real-world
setting in competitive summer
internships. The ENTRYPOINT! internships are particularly valuable
because of the availability
of mentoring and assistive technology, facilitating the entry and
advancement of individuals with
significant disabilities into competitive employment and research at
all levels. Details at
http://www.mentornet.net/news/newsart.aspx?nid=29&sid=4
- APS/IBM Research Internship for Women
Undergraduates
Information on
the 2008 APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women is now
available! These summer
internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long, and include
in addition a $2,500
grant, plus the opportunity to work with a mentor at one of three IBM
research locations. Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2008.
Complete details on the program and how to
apply are available
at
http://www.mentornet.net/news/newsart.aspx?nid=29&sid=4
- 2008 Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program (American Association of Physicists in Medicine)
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program is pleased to announce
the availability of its Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program for 2008. The program is designed to provide
opportunities for undergraduate university students to gain experience in medical physics by performing research in a
medical physics laboratory or assisting with clinical service at a clinical facility. In this program, the AAPM serves as
a clearinghouse to match exceptional students with exceptional medical physicists, many of whom are faculty at leading
research centers. Students participating in the program are placed into summer positions that are consistent with their
interest. Students are selected for the program on a competitive basis to be an AAPM summer fellow. Each summer fellow
receives a stipend from the AAPM. Application deadline is February 1, 2008.
The fellowship will be for a period of 10 weeks during the summer academic period (May 1 to September 30), which is
mutually suitable to the mentor and fellow.
More information can be found at http://www.aapm.org/education/SUFP/
- Lee Teng Undergraduate Internship in Accelerator Science
and Engineering
Applications are now being accepted for the Summer 2008
"Lee Teng Undergraduate Internship in Accelerator Science
and Engineering", sponsored jointly by Argonne National
Laboratory, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and
the US Partice Accelerator School. The internship will
provide a unique research opportunity to select students
from US universities who are currently in their Junior
year in physics, engineering, or computer science. Each
intern will work closely with a mentor from one of the
two laboratories on a project related to accelerator
science and/or engineering. The ten week program includes
a generous stipend, as well as travel and housing
allowances. In addition, the program includes full
tuition and travel expenses to the two week US Particle
