PHZ-5335 High Energy Physics 2: Beyond the Standard Model

Professor: Howie Baer
E-mail: baer@hep.fsu.edu

Goals:
For several decades, the Standard Model reigned as our ultimate theory of nature at its most fundamental level. However, recently data have emerged on a variety of fronts that demand modifications, and movement towards a theory Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). This course seeks to give students an introduction to a variety of topics in physics BSM. We will begin with a review of the SM, as presented in QFTB. Next, we will examine data on neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, and see how to modify the SM in order to incorporate these effects. Next, we will examine the $SU(5)$ and $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), and their successes and failures. We will also examine supersymmetry and supergravity and theories involving extra dimensions, starting with Kaluza-Klein theory. Finally, we will have a very brief introduction to superstring theory.
