Text: Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Paul A. Tipler, Third Edition, Worth Publishers
Lectures: Tues. & Thurs. from 9:30 to 10:45 AM in 101 Richards (UPL)

Lecturer: Stephan von Molnár Office: 406 Keen Phone: 644-5075
Office Hours: Tues. & Thurs. 11:15 AM-12:15 PM e-mail:molnar@magnet.fsu.edu

All students in PHY 2048C should be enrolled in the Tues. - Thurs. lectures, a Mon - Wed discussion section, and a laboratory section. No one should enroll in PHY 2048 (the course without laboratory) without discussing their eligibility for that course with Dr. von Molnár.

All students meet together on Tues. and Thurs. for presentation of the new material through lectures and demonstrations and testing of what has been learned through periodic exams. Study the designated text sections before class.

In addition to the final exam, there will be a mid-term exam and ten 20-minute mini-exams during the semester. The subject of the exams may be any previously assigned material. Discuss any problem, which would cause you to miss an exam with Dr. von Molnárprior to the exam, unless the problem could not have been anticipated.

A very important component of the course is the Mon. and Wed. discussion classes, which meet as scheduled below. Solving problems is the best way to learn physics and these small classes are devoted to problem solving with active student involvement. Your instructor will determine a grade between 0 and 60 points based on your performance in these discussion classes. Possible solutions to the homework will be placed on reserve in the Dirac Science Library and in the glass case outside 101 UPL.

The laboratory is also an important component of the course and you are expected to attend all laboratory courses. A penalty of 30 points will be subtracted from your grade for each missed laboratory session.
